The Senior Optical Engineer will be responsible for designing and managing development of GoPro's Optical Systems. The Engineer will specify the details of optical lenses, characterize, design and validate the performance of the lenses, and manage relationships with top-tier optical vendors. In addition, the position will interact with camera design team and cross-functional teams to bring new optical systems to mass production. The ideal candidate will have expertise in lens design and manufacturing, and industry experience in a high volume lens production environment.
What You Will Do
Own all aspects of lens design, innovation, qualification, release to production, manufacturing bring-up and sustaining support
Define and simulate detailed optical requirements based on future product needs
Analyze lens prescriptions and provide design guidance to vendors to ensure specifications are met:
optical performance, stray light analysis, tolerance analysis, manufacturability
Supervise prototype and production lens testing to validate performance meets GoPro's specifications
Develop and manage internal processes and procedures to streamline design efforts, optimize testing and encourage innovation
Manage relationships with lens vendors to ensure performance requirements, schedule and budget are met
Collaborate cross-functionally with product definition, camera design, quality, operations, vendors and contract manufacturers to ensure product excellence and consistency
Create new solutions and develop new technologies in optics to continually innovate and disrupt consumer digital imaging systems
Provide mentorship, technical guidance and project review for optical team members
Skills We're Stoked About
S. or M.S. in engineering or physics

years of experience in lens, optical system design and production environment
Expertise in Code V or Zemax; Stray light analysis (Fred or LightTools) a plus
Industry experience in lens manufacturing
Expertise and experience in lens design for digital cameras, automotive, security or mobile
Strong knowledge of and experience in specifying lens design and performance parameters
Experience in testing and characterizing lens performance
Experience in designing and testing the optical front-ends of digital camera systems (i.e., lens-sensor combination)
Experience in international vendor management
Strong communication skills
Knowledge of image sensor and processing systems is strongly preferred
